Maurice Steger, musician and educator in Early Music PDF Print E-mail
Maurice Steger’s interest in education was sparked during his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts, which he successfully completed with degrees in Arts and a Master’s in Educational Sciences. He then went on to teach at the University for many years.

Since then, Maurice Steger has become a successful soloist and conductor travelling the world and teaching master classes in Europe and overseas. His two Swiss festivals in Solothurn and Schaffhausen have become attractive centres for young recorder artists. During the last several seasons, he taught master classes in Taiwan, Viersen, Paris, Zurich, Nuremberg, Tokyo and was a visiting professor at the Universities of Montreal (McGill), Freiburg, Mozarteum Salzburg, Ankara (Bilent), and Berlin (Hanns Eisler) – educating many instrumentalists of Early Music.
Professor Steger does not just work with recorder artists, but also with ensembles for Early Music – he specialises in Italian music from the 17th century, German orchestral works from the 18th century and European sonatas for wind instruments from the Baroque period. He also works as a conductor with orchestras, using either historical instruments or adapting Early Music for modern instruments.
In his native Switzerland, Maurice Steger has also launched educational projects for children with workshops and storytelling exercises. He developed the character of Tino Flautino and has performed more than 150 concerts for children, effectively leading to a revival for the recorder among young audiences. Maurice Steger also headed the juries of the successful recorder contests in Montreal and London in 2010.
