Maurice Steger - Biography: recorder and conductor

According to The Independent, Maurice Steger is «the world’s leading recorder virtuoso». And indeed, with his tours all across the globe and his numerous CDs, some of which received the most prestigious awards, the artist has established himself as today’s most renowned virtuoso playing the recorder. With his dynamic style and his brilliant, yet spontaneous and personal technique, he has also contributed to a resurgence of interest in the recorder as an instrument.

Maurice Steger’s interest in education was sparked during his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts, which he successfully completed with degrees in Arts and a Master’s in Educational Sciences. He then went on to teach at the University for many years.

Maurice Steger è internazionalmente riconosciuto come uno dei virtuosi del flauto dolce più influenti e uno dei solisti più popolari della sua generazione. Nato a Winterthur (Svizzera) nel 1971, ha studiato alla «Musikhochschule Zürich», dove ha in particolare seguito l'insegnamento di Pedro Memelsdorff e dove, dal 1991 al 1994, ha proseguito i suoi studi nella masterclass di Kees Boeke. Dopo ulteriori studi in diversi centri musicali d'Europa, ha ottenuto il suo diploma di solista nel 1995 con “summa cum laude”. In seguito ha vinto numerosi premi di concorso e di cultura, tra quali il «Friedrich Hegar Preis» e, nel 2002, il prestigiosissimo premio «Karajan» del «Eliette von Karajan Kulturfonds».
